Spot forex and CFDs: identifying the contract

PRACTICAL GUIDE

Explained concepts, worked cases and practice to test your understanding. Numerical examples are hypothetical; replace assumptions with your instrument specifications.

01

The essentials

Spot describes a currency exchange with settlement rules; a CFD settles price differences under a contract. The forex label alone does not establish ownership, delivery, counterparty or funding. Read the contractual product definition.

02

Understand the mechanism, not just the definition

Forex describes a market or currency exposure rather than a legal product structure. Check whether the contract exchanges currencies, settles differences or uses another model. Settlement, funding and counterparty can differ with the same pair chart. A platform name does not establish currency ownership or delivery.

03

Example and verification

For payment currency, ask whether you receive transferable money. For leveraged positions, check whether only differences settle. EUR/USD labels do not make rights, settlement and costs equivalent.

04

Worked case, step by step

Two products follow EUR/USD, one exchanging currencies and another settling a price difference on contractual quantity. Record delivery, settlement, currency and holding costs before comparing outcomes. Similar screens do not erase these differences; interpret volume and margin under each contract.

05

What to verify when applying this

Compare product, counterparty, continuity or expiry and holding costs. Do not describe every forex account as a currency-exchange bank account. Retain the document describing your transaction before funding it.

06

Practice: verify it in your environment

Learn by observing the process and keeping its data. Complete this practice in demo or using documentation, without sending real orders or adding capital for the exercise. Record differences between the example and your account specifications.

  1. Complete a contract record before calculating transaction costs.
  2. Find the product definition rather than treating marketing labels as specifications.
07

Test your understanding

Try the question before revealing the answer. Justify the conclusion and its assumptions rather than memorizing a number.

Does following the same chart establish identical contracts?

Reveal the explained answer

No. Identify settlement, counterparty and obligations for each product.
