Forex: how to read a currency pair

PRACTICAL GUIDE

Explained concepts, worked cases and practice to test your understanding. Numerical examples are hypothetical; replace assumptions with your instrument specifications.

01

The essentials

A pair expresses one currency in units of another. In EUR/USD, EUR is the base currency and USD the quote currency. Buying the pair creates exposure favoring the euro against the dollar; selling reverses that direction, depending on the contracted product.

02

Understand the mechanism, not just the definition

A quote relates units; it does not tell you whether a currency is cheap or expensive. The first currency is the quantity bought or sold and the second expresses its price. Inverting the pair changes the number, so the same subtraction cannot be applied to EUR/USD and USD/EUR. Monetary results depend on exposed base-currency units, not posted margin.

03

Example and verification

Hypothetical example: EUR/USD at 1.1000 means USD 1.10 per euro. A rise to 1.1100 is a USD 0.0100 change per euro. It is not a 1% account gain: results depend on size, costs and conversion.

04

Worked case, step by step

Before costs, buying exposure to EUR 1,000 at USD 1.1000 per euro and closing at 1.1050 produces USD 5 gross: 0.0050 multiplied by 1,000. Closing at 1.0950 produces −USD 5. A smaller initial margin does not change this sensitivity. Spread, commissions and conversion are deducted separately.

1,000 EUR × (1.1050 − 1.1000) USD/EUR = 5 USD
05

What to verify when applying this

Before selecting a broker, check the pair, contract size and product: spot, CFD or another derivative. Do not apply EUR/USD specifications to JPY pairs, metals or indices.

06

Practice: verify it in your environment

Learn by observing the process and keeping its data. Complete this practice in demo or using documentation, without sending real orders or adding capital for the exercise. Record differences between the example and your account specifications.

  1. Write units beside each figure: EUR, USD/EUR and resulting USD.
  2. Repeat for buying and selling, with favorable and unfavorable moves.
07

Test your understanding

Try the question before revealing the answer. Justify the conclusion and its assumptions rather than memorizing a number.

What changes with exposure to EUR 10,000?

Reveal the explained answer

The same movement produces USD 50 gross, positive or negative depending on direction. Exposure increases tenfold; the price does not change.
