PRACTICAL GUIDE
Explained concepts, worked cases and practice to test your understanding. Numerical examples are hypothetical; replace assumptions with your instrument specifications.
The essentials
A CFD is a contract whose outcome depends on a price difference under its terms. It does not constitute ownership of the underlying asset. Buying a share or ETF unit and trading its CFD are different contractual decisions.
Understand the mechanism, not just the definition
The distinction is not sharing a chart, but the rights and obligations created by the contract. For a derivative, examine collateral, financing and adjustments; for an asset purchase, examine custody, ownership and corporate actions. A dividend-related cash adjustment does not turn a CFD into a share or create voting rights.
Example and verification
Two screens may show the same company. Check whether the order buys shares or opens a derivative, its quantity, and dividend, funding and corporate-action treatment. A CFD dividend adjustment does not create voting rights.
Worked case, step by step
Consider a move from 100 to 105 with economic exposure to 10 shares. Both products could show 50 gross, but an overnight CFD may include financing while the asset purchase has its own cost structure. Compare net results over the same holding period and record rights as well as chart values.
What to verify when applying this
Compare the actual product offered by the entity serving your country. Do not assign a European entity's catalog or protections to a LATAM account. Separate real-asset and derivative fees in your table.
Practice: verify it in your environment
Learn by observing the process and keeping its data. Complete this practice in demo or using documentation, without sending real orders or adding capital for the exercise. Record differences between the example and your account specifications.
- Compare ownership, counterparty, funding, dividends and voting rights in two columns.
- Calculate an intraday close and a multi-night holding example.
Test your understanding
Try the question before revealing the answer. Justify the conclusion and its assumptions rather than memorizing a number.
Does a dividend adjustment establish share ownership?
Reveal the explained answer
No. Ownership is established by contract and custody. An adjustment may be part of derivative settlement.
