Liquidity providers and execution models

PRACTICAL GUIDE

Explained concepts, worked cases and practice to test your understanding. Numerical examples are hypothetical; replace assumptions with your instrument specifications.

01

The essentials

Liquidity providers supply prices or trading capacity. Their presence alone does not establish your counterparty or every order's execution. ECN and STP labels need contractual context.

02

Understand the mechanism, not just the definition

Execution connects instructions with prices and liquidity under contractual rules. STP or ECN labels do not describe all rules or guarantee a better outcome. Check execution types, rejections, partial fills and conflicts. Evaluate documentation and comparable observations rather than acronyms alone.

03

Example and verification

Request the execution policy: pricing, entity role, orders and conflicts. Infrastructure descriptions differ from client contracts. Provider connectivity does not automatically establish exchange execution or central clearing.

04

Worked case, step by step

An order for ten units finds six at one price and four at another. Its weighted average may differ from the first visible quote. Policies permitting partial fills can create several executions. Record quantity, price and time for each before concluding an error, then compare with published policy.

05

What to verify when applying this

Compare policies and equivalent trades rather than acronyms. Do not infer constant spreads, zero slippage or unlimited liquidity. A platform's depth display does not explain all liquidity for your instrument.

06

Practice: verify it in your environment

Learn by observing the process and keeping its data. Complete this practice in demo or using documentation, without sending real orders or adding capital for the exercise. Record differences between the example and your account specifications.

  1. Read policy and record market, limit and partial-fill rules.
  2. Calculate a weighted average without treating the first quote as guaranteed.
07

Test your understanding

Try the question before revealing the answer. Justify the conclusion and its assumptions rather than memorizing a number.

Does an execution acronym establish no slippage?

Reveal the explained answer

No. Check the applicable policy, conditions and execution records.
