TradingView: alerts, lists, charts and delayed data

PRACTICAL GUIDE

Explained concepts, worked cases and practice to test your understanding. Numerical examples are hypothetical; replace assumptions with your instrument specifications.

01

The essentials

Alerts notify conditions; they are not executed orders. Symbol source and permissions determine available data. Lists and chart settings organize analysis without validating a strategy.

02

Understand the mechanism, not just the definition

An alert is an observation rule, not an executed order or validated recommendation. It depends on condition, frequency and chart data. An intrabar condition may change before close while a close-based rule observes a different moment. Keep symbol and data source, especially when comparing another provider’s account.

03

Example and verification

Select a symbol and create an alert using the chart's alert control. Check condition, frequency, expiry and delivery. Separately retain feed, interval and indicators. When parameters change, inspect the existing alert instead of assuming automatic updates.

04

Worked case, step by step

A quote crosses a level then returns below it before candle close. Intrabar crossing and closing-above alerts may behave differently without failure. Record the exact rule and test delivery. With delayed data, a timely alert for that chart does not establish real-time execution-market information.

05

What to verify when applying this

Check data coverage, limits and plan features before paying. Distinguish delayed and real-time quotes, subscriptions and broker execution. Similar names in a list can mix markets and contracts; verify each symbol.

06

Practice: verify it in your environment

Learn by observing the process and keeping its data. Complete this practice in demo or using documentation, without sending real orders or adding capital for the exercise. Record differences between the example and your account specifications.

  1. Create a test alert and record condition, frequency, feed and delay.
  2. Compare intrabar and close-based behavior in a practice environment.
07

Test your understanding

Try the question before revealing the answer. Justify the conclusion and its assumptions rather than memorizing a number.

Does receiving an alert confirm a broker order was executed?

Reveal the explained answer

No. Verify rule, notification and any authorized execution system separately.
