PRACTICAL GUIDE
Explained concepts, worked cases and practice to test your understanding. Numerical examples are hypothetical; replace assumptions with your instrument specifications.
The essentials
MT4 and MT5 are different platforms. Do not assume an account, robot or indicator transfers directly between them. The broker determines the available instruments and account types for each platform.
Understand the mechanism, not just the definition
Choose based on required instruments, orders, history and automation. MT5 can use netting or hedging depending on the account. MQL4 and MQL5 are different environments, so changing applications does not guarantee an indicator or robot works without adaptation and testing.
Example and verification
If you use automation, identify version, dependencies and format before migrating. Keep a copy and test in demo. Matching chart symbols do not establish matching contract sizes, historical data or execution.
Worked case, step by step
In a netting example, buying 0.10 lot and then selling 0.04 of the same symbol can leave 0.06 net long. A compatible hedging system may keep separate positions. This changes volume, closing and history interpretation. Test only in demo and check the account system; an opposite order does not always close or always hedge the earlier one.
What to verify when applying this
Compare account requirements, operating system, instruments and needed tools. Ask about compatibility for your entity. A newer platform does not guarantee better results or remove the need to review costs and contracts.
Practice: verify it in your environment
Learn by observing the process and keeping its data. Complete this practice in demo or using documentation, without sending real orders or adding capital for the exercise. Record differences between the example and your account specifications.
- List required features and verify them for the specific account.
- Before migrating automation, test compatibility and outcomes in a separate environment.
Test your understanding
Try the question before revealing the answer. Justify the conclusion and its assumptions rather than memorizing a number.
Does the MT5 name establish that your account allows hedging?
Reveal the explained answer
No. Check that account’s configured system and the broker’s closing rules.
