USD/MXN and exotic pairs: specifications and liquidity

PRACTICAL GUIDE

Explained concepts, worked cases and practice to test your understanding. Numerical examples are hypothetical; replace assumptions with your instrument specifications.

01

The essentials

A pair including your local currency does not remove exchange-rate risk or contract costs. The exotic label alone does not establish liquidity or pricing. Check availability, size, sessions and funding for the specific symbol.

02

Understand the mechanism, not just the definition

A LATAM currency does not imply major-pair liquidity. Depth, spread, sessions and funding may differ. Verify convention and precision before borrowing another pair’s pip size. Exposure and result currency determine sensitivity, not how many digits visibly move.

03

Example and verification

Record USD/MXN bid and ask at matching times and monetize the difference using size. Check MXN results and account conversion. Do not automatically apply EUR/USD terms.

04

Worked case, step by step

For hypothetical USD 1,000 exposure in USD/MXN, a move from 18.0000 to 18.1000 is MXN 0.10 per USD, or MXN 100 gross with sign depending on direction. Account currency requires the applicable conversion. Wider spread and funding can materially change a small position’s net result.

05

What to verify when applying this

Check spread, commission and directional funding for your period. Without entity-specific specifications, do not assume the pair is offered. A Mexican account does not establish access to every MXN instrument.

06

Practice: verify it in your environment

Learn by observing the process and keeping its data. Complete this practice in demo or using documentation, without sending real orders or adding capital for the exercise. Record differences between the example and your account specifications.

  1. Check contract size, precision, session, swap and result currency.
  2. Observe spreads at multiple times rather than extrapolating one snapshot.
07

Test your understanding

Try the question before revealing the answer. Justify the conclusion and its assumptions rather than memorizing a number.

Is that movement’s initial result in USD or MXN?

Reveal the explained answer

In MXN, the quote currency. Do not confuse base-currency exposure with result settlement currency.
