PRACTICAL GUIDE
Explained concepts, worked cases and practice to test your understanding. Numerical examples are hypothetical; replace assumptions with your instrument specifications.
The essentials
Shares, ETFs and their CFDs may treat dividends and corporate events differently. A derivative cash adjustment does not grant ownership or corporate rights. Check direction, formula and application date in the terms.
Understand the mechanism, not just the definition
Corporate actions affect price, quantity and history differently by product. Shares, CFDs and adjusted chart series are not equivalent records. During suspension, a last quote does not establish executable liquidity at that price. Distinguish displayed price, market status and contractual rights.
Example and verification
Record instrument, entity, event, position and adjustment. Compare with the document before calling an isolated amount profit. Suspensions or closed sessions can prevent trading even if another feed still displays a reference price.
Worked case, step by step
In a hypothetical two-for-one split, 10 shares at 100 become 20 at 50, keeping total value 1,000 before other effects rather than generating automatic profit. CFDs may apply their own adjustments and charts may restate history. Reconcile position, specifications and records rather than screenshots alone.
10 × 100 = 20 × 50 = 1,000What to verify when applying this
Check events, size changes and suspensions. Compare matching products and periods without mixing share rights with CFD adjustments. Request missing data before holding exposure through an event.
Practice: verify it in your environment
Learn by observing the process and keeping its data. Complete this practice in demo or using documentation, without sending real orders or adding capital for the exercise. Record differences between the example and your account specifications.
- Record date, event and contractual treatment before interpreting history.
- Compare quantities, prices and monetary adjustments over the same period.
Test your understanding
Try the question before revealing the answer. Justify the conclusion and its assumptions rather than memorizing a number.
Does doubling shares in a split automatically double economic value?
Reveal the explained answer
No. Unit price also falls in the example. Check other effects and product rules.
