Cryptoassets versus crypto CFDs: contract and custody

PRACTICAL GUIDE

Explained concepts, worked cases and practice to test your understanding. Numerical examples are hypothetical; replace assumptions with your instrument specifications.

01

The essentials

Buying a cryptoasset and trading a CFD on its price are different. A CFD does not establish ownership, blockchain withdrawals or rights to the asset. Availability depends on entity and residence.

02

Understand the mechanism, not just the definition

Crypto price exposure does not necessarily mean owning a unit transferable to your own address. A CFD specifies settlement and counterparty while asset acquisition involves custody, access and transfer. A shared ticker does not establish sessions, funding or custody responsibilities.

03

Example and verification

Check whether the contract permits asset transfer or only price-difference settlement. Record custody, size, funding and hours. A continuously traded underlying market does not establish matching CFD sessions or maintenance.

04

Worked case, step by step

A ticket exposes 0.10 BTC but cannot withdraw BTC to an address: it may be cash-settled derivative exposure. Another account buys the asset with platform custody. Compare transfer rights, settlement, costs, sessions and withdrawals; a price screenshot is not proof of ownership.

05

What to verify when applying this

Compare the product rather than a Bitcoin logo. Separate network fees for transferable assets from derivative charges. Offering a CFD does not establish acceptance of cryptocurrency deposits.

06

Practice: verify it in your environment

Learn by observing the process and keeping its data. Complete this practice in demo or using documentation, without sending real orders or adding capital for the exercise. Record differences between the example and your account specifications.

  1. Separate derivative exposure, asset custody and address control.
  2. Record settlement currency and charges for each model.
07

Test your understanding

Try the question before revealing the answer. Justify the conclusion and its assumptions rather than memorizing a number.

Does BTC in the instrument name establish bitcoin transferability?

Reveal the explained answer

No. Check product, custody and provider withdrawal rules.
