Fixed or variable spreads: timing and liquidity

PRACTICAL GUIDE

Explained concepts, worked cases and practice to test your understanding. Numerical examples are hypothetical; replace assumptions with your instrument specifications.

01

The essentials

Variable spreads change with quotes and market conditions. A spread described as fixed has contractual conditions to read. Neither an advertised minimum nor a single screenshot represents typical costs for every trade.

02

Understand the mechanism, not just the definition

A spread is observed under specific conditions at a particular moment. A minimum does not describe its distribution across a session. For variable spreads, examine how often they stay near the minimum and behave in thin liquidity; for so-called fixed spreads, check contractual exceptions. Compare the same instrument, time and currency.

03

Example and verification

Sample the same symbol and account at defined calm and volatile times. Record date, server time, bid, ask and commission. Compare matching time windows rather than a liquid hour against a market opening.

04

Worked case, step by step

For twenty equal-duration observations, nineteen at 1 pip and one at 10 yield median 1 and mean 1.45. The median describes the center while the maximum highlights costly episodes. This hypothetical sample does not establish permanent conditions or actual execution costs; it teaches documented comparison.

05

What to verify when applying this

Ask about exceptions, gaps and whether commission is included. Funding also matters when holding positions. Label demo data as demo instead of presenting it as verified live pricing.

06

Practice: verify it in your environment

Learn by observing the process and keeping its data. Complete this practice in demo or using documentation, without sending real orders or adding capital for the exercise. Record differences between the example and your account specifications.

  1. Sample different times and mark economic announcements and thin-liquidity periods.
  2. Keep bid, ask and time; calculate median, mean and maximum separately by instrument.
07

Test your understanding

Try the question before revealing the answer. Justify the conclusion and its assumptions rather than memorizing a number.

Is comparing “from 0” with a 1.2-pip average equivalent?

Reveal the explained answer

No. Minimum and mean are different measures. Collect comparable observations and include applicable account commissions.
